Purpose and area of application At low temperatures, diesel fuel is liable to viscosity increase and paraffinization, which impedes of makes impossible pumping it along the fuel line and impairs both fuel atomization and mixture formation. This refers mainly to summer fuel grades whose viscosity even at the temperature of 3 °C leads to power losses and increased fuel consumption because of fuel atomization problems. At -5 to -7 °C the precipitation of paraffin begins, and at -12 to -14 °C the fuel becomes completely paraffinized and loses its filterability.
Similar processes occur in winter fuel grades at lower temperatures. Thus, to maintain stable fuel delivery along the fuel line it is necessary, first of all, to ensure the fuel flow through the filter cell. World experience with motor vehicles has proved that an optimal means for solving this problem is local heating up the filter and/or heating up fuel at the filter inlet.
DLC "Nomacon" produces several types of heaters powered from the electrical power system of a motor vehicle with a voltage of 12 and 24 V. Those are pre-start preheaters for the fine fuel filter and flow-through heaters installed into the fuel line before the filter.
Because of limited power capacity of a vehicle-borne battery, in field conditions it is impossible to raise the fuel temperature up to a required value along the whole fuel line and, all the more, in the fuel tank. To solve the problem, NOMACON has developed and is producing a heated fuel intake wherein a hot liquid (heated diesel-engine coolant) fed from the engine serves as a heat source.
Five-year service experience has revealed high efficiency of our fuel heaters in climatic zones with a temperature down to -40 °C.

Heated fuel intake TP-1 Heated fuel intake (HFI) manufactured by DLC "Nomacon" (Minsk, Belarus) is designed for combined heating of diesel fuel immediately in the fuel tank in winter service environment.
The heated fuel intake performs all the functions of a standard one, viz. fuel draw-in from the tank, return of residual fuel, and both pre-start (short-term) and long-run fuel preheating.
Pre-start preheating is performed by posistor elements installed in the fuel intake.
Long-run (temperature-maintaining) preheating occurs due to heat exchange with a hot heat-carrying liquid (heated diesel-engine coolant) fed to HFI from the cabin heating system. Efficient heating is ensured by both substantial power (up to 2 kW) evolved during the heat-carrier circulation in the HFI and original design of the heat exchanger. The use of HFI permits abandoning intermediate heaters because the heat accumulated by the fuel (due to its high heat capacity) is enough to eliminate paraffinization of filters on its way to the fuel pump.

*When using a 42 mm diameter steel tube with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm (Russian standard GOST 9941) **When using a 45 mm diameter steel tube with a wall thickness of 3 mm
The design implements the idea of heating a thin layer of fuel (no more than 1.5-2 mm thick) which exchanges heat with a hot heat-carrying agent circulating at a high rate.

Rim-like pre-start preheater The preheater is mounted onto a fine fuel filter of any size.
Ensures fuel flow through the filter by dissolving the petroleum paraffins before starting the engine.
Provides heat shielding of the filter from cold air flow during motion.
Large contact area between the heat-conducting surface of the heater and the lateral surface of the filter ensures fast heating and minimal power consumption.
