COMBINED EXTRUSION&PULTRUSION PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING OF FIBER REINFORCED THERMOPLASTIC PRODUCTS

Application:

    manufacturing of composite materials and constructional parts:
  • granulated long fiber reinforced thermoplastics (LFT) for injection and compression moulding;
  • unidirectional fiber reinforced strands and tapes, and on-line laying or winding;
  • long-sized and curvilinear profiles of various cross-section, also with variable on length structure.

The process include:

  • plastication by extrusion of thermoplastic polymers, including secondary, in the melt;
  • impregnation by pultrusion of fibrous bundles (in particular, glass roving) with polymer melt, and also (depending on a product)
  • making of granules - at manufacturing of LFT for injection or press moulding;
  • making of tapes and on-line consolidation, laying or winding - at manufacturing of flat-bed parts or rotation bodies;
  • consolidation of strands or tapes, on-line shaping or roll (dieless) forming - at manufacturing of profile products.

The most essential features:

  • use a granules of a industry produced thermoplastic polymers and secondary polymeric raw with high melt viscosity (to 5000 Pa.s);
  • use of roving with high thickness (to 5000 tex) and reduction of creels number and area, occupied by creels;
  • possibility of change in a wide diapason of fiber fraction (from 10 up to 50 % of weight or more), of structure and properties of a composite material in the parts, and of a optimum fiber bundles arrangement in their sections;
  • flexibility of process, quick and simple re-equipment (some minutes) on other product articles;
  • high productivity (up to 3-5 kg/h x number of a 2400-5000 tex roving);
  • lowered power and labor cost, decrease of a thermal destruction of a matrix polymer at the on-line operations with a molten polymer;
  • use standard extruders and concerning simple impregnating, shaping and pulling devices.
